Kettlebell A new 8 week session of kettlebell basics starts 1/21!
what is kettlebell?
What is a Kettlebell? A kettlebell is a round weight with a handle. That’s it! Juno uses competition-grade bells measured in kilograms, from 8kg (18lb) to 32kg (70lb). There are many ways to use a kettlebell to achieve fitness, but at Juno we specialize in Girevoy Sport training.
What is Girevoy Sport? Girevoy Sport originated in Russia, where there are local, regional and national competitions in the sport. Girevoy Sport focuses on training for kettlebell lifting consisting of two competitive events: - Biathlon: two 10-minute events; snatch and jerk for 10 minutes each. The snatch is one movement, bringing the bell up in an arch from thighs to above your head in a continuous motion. The jerk is a lift moving the bell from a resting position on your “rack” (or core) in a straight line above your head and back down again. - Long cycle: one 10-minute event. The long cycle is a combined clean and jerk, swinging the bell away from a resting position in the rack, between the legs and then above the head.
Can both men and women do all the moves? Yes! Men and women use one bell for snatch; women use one bell for the long cycle. Men use two bells for the jerk and long cycle.
Is this as simple as it sounds? Actually, no! It’s complicated and hard, but extremely rewarding. Girevoy Sport is very technical; it focuses on strength, endurance, flexibility and a lot of mental fortitude. As a sport and as a fitness program, learning kettlebell sport is an enjoyable challenge, as you constantly strive for better and better technical skill in order to move up to a higher weight of the bell. Initially this is very difficult: learning the proper technique of lifting, learning how to breathe, and learning how to challenge yourself in your sessions. Because of these challenges, it’s best to work with a knowledgeable trainer who can guide you and help prevent you from being injured. Juno coaches have learned how to do this from the best of the best in Russia.
How is this different from kettlebells in DVDs or that you can buy at stores? In the United States, using kettlebells as part of a fitness program is gaining in popularity. Girevoy Sport, with its attention to form and use of competition style bells, is in its infancy in the US. You can compete on a national level in the US, where you will meet people from all over who are passionate about this amazing sport.
Do I have to compete? No – the training is about form and endurance. In pushing yourself to perfect the form, you increase your strength and endurance beyond what you thought was possible. This is a reward in itself.
Will kettlebells cause me to bulk up? There is a common misconception that weight training will increase bulk. Not true. Because kettlebells mix cardio endurance and weightlifting, women in particular see a dramatic loss in fat and an increase in lean mass. The sport stretches muscles, spreads the effort of lifting across all the major muscle groups and core, and increases cardiovascular endurance. Benefits are wide ranging beyond fat loss, including increased bone density, muscle tone, improved wind and more.
Isn’t lifting weights going to hurt my back? At Juno, trainers focus on giving instruction for how to properly lift the bells above all else. We start with low weights and practice rigorous injury prevention. In fact, the bells will strengthen your core (to support your back) and your entire posterior chain.
I’m out of shape - won’t it take forever for me to be able to do this? Although there is a learning curve, as soon as you get the basic movement patterns: not at all. This sport is incredibly efficient. A 50-minute workout provides an amazing amount of fitness in a short amount of time and is the ideal practice for busy people.
I’m already really in shape, how will this help me? You have no idea what your limits are until you try kettlebell training. Juno members who work with the bells include competitive mixed martial artists, competitive cyclists, marathon runners, dancers, rowers, yoga practitioners and more. They all use Girevoy Sport to reach new levels of strength and flexibility that help them excel in their other activities.
How do I do it? The focus at Juno is in constantly improving technique. Through learning the skill of lifting the bells, you find the fitness. This means practice. We offer individual sessions with our coaches, classes for those who are advanced twice a week, and online training for those who are self-motivated and proficient in technique.

Juliet Lederle NCSA-CPT/IKSFA-level 2/IKFF-CKT/OKC

Juliet Lederle started working out late in life. Initially she tried yoga and Pilates, but they did not provide adequate stress relief or the physical outlet she craved. She started running, albeit slowly. After a few years and increasingly faster miles Juliet suddenly had to undergo invasive treatment for a chronic condition. The treatment severely limited her running, energy, and livelihood. Because of her experience, she swore that as soon as she got better she would get into the best shape of her life. As she finished her treatment, she discovered anaerobic conditioning and strength training and fell in love. She felt more motivated, stronger, and more comfortable in her body and her life than ever before.

Determined to share her discoveries with others, Juliet started pursuing a career as a personal trainer. She got her A.C.E. personal training certification and started personal training and leading large boot-camp style classes at the Ice Chamber in Albany. She and two other trainers from the Ice Chamber broke off from the Ice Chamber to found the Phoenix Gym in Berkeley. Juliet became IKFF (International Kettlebell Fitness Federation) certified so that she could train others in the fundamentals of kettlebell sport, an activity that combines strength, aerobic conditioning, flexibility and endurance in one energy-packed workout.

In January 2010, she decided to branch out on her own, and so Juno Fitness was conceived. Her current workouts incorporate a hybrid of kettlebell workouts, running, high-level conditioning and a whole lot of whining to her coaches.

Juliet is currently training at competition level for kettlebell sport. In June of 2011 she competed in New York, in the IKSFA/ IKFF meet. She earned rank one in biathlon and won women’s absolute (best overall) lifter with the 16k bell. She constantly pushes herself to train harder; she will never make her clients go where she has not.

Juliet’s compassion and ability to push her clients beyond what they believe they can achieve has earned her a loyal fan base. She uses her knowledge to train elite athletes, pre and postpartum women, elderly clients and everyone in between.

Willow Dean ACE/TRX

For over a decade Willow worked at UCSF conducting basic research in heart, lung, and connective tissue damage and repair. She stayed active throughout this time, participating in a wide range of outdoors activities along with going to the gym. A knee injury incurred while training for the San Francisco AIDS marathon sidelined her from her usual physical activity. During recovery, days in the lab were punctuated by hours of rehab at a local gym. Being surrounded by connective tissue research at work and learning about the repair of connective tissue at the gym was life-changing for Willow. She met many like-minded people of all ages and fitness levels training to be fitter and more functional in their daily lives and sport-specific activities. Working side by side with these people gave Willow the inspiration to become a personal trainer.

Willow is an avid road cyclist and enjoys climbing, surfing, yoga, Pilates, walking her dogs and cooking when she's not in the gym. She believes that participating in a balanced exercise program is the key to functional longevity whether the "sport" is chasing your kids or competing in triathlons.

Whatever your fitness goals, Willow will push you to your limits to get results. She will help you transform your body in amazing ways using free weights, bodyweight, and core training.

Sarah Lightfoot IKSFA-level 2,OKC and Rich Lopez OKC

After a childhood illness, Sarah turned to athletics. In 1989, during high school, she rowed in the Junior World Championships in Szeged, Hungary, with the US Junior National Team. In her 30’s Sarah raced bicycles nationally and locally, achieving a category 2 rank. Now entering her 40’s, Sarah currently trains at competition level for kettlebell sport. She enjoys the combo of strength, endurance, and technique offered by kettlebell sport. Certified as a Kettlebell Sport Coach by the International Kettlebell Sports Federation, she enjoys helping others excel in training for this very cool fringe sport with worldwide appeal.

Rich Lopez loves kettlebells. Until he found them a little more than a year ago he had barely worked out since his time in the army almost twenty years ago. Like so many people, Rich wanted something that was fun and invigorating but didn't involve a lot of space or bulky machinery, and could be done at home just as easily as in a gym. After his first visit with Juliet, he was hooked, and participated in his first competition seven months later. Rich has been assisting with teaching kettlebell classes and students -- with an acute attention to technique and an emphasis on form, in addition to delivering an effective, efficient workout -- since the beginning of 2011.

On the side he runs his green house cleaning business and goes to school so that he will eventually be known as Nurse Lopez.
